Carmelo probably doesn’t believe this, but what do you want him to say? You can’t set a bad example with the young players by saying the season is over before it starts.
So, all things considered it was the right thing to say.

“Yeah, we competing,” Anthony shot back after Day 2 of training camp at West Point. “People might not believe that but we definitely competing for that. That’s always going to be the goal. Whether we get there or not, that depends on us and how we do but that’s always our big-picture goal.”
There are low expectations for the Knicks, which is probably a good thing. Can only go up from here.
