Like most things in life, things aren’t black and white, there are a lot of gray areas. Greg Hardy’s situation is more about him not being aware how media will perceive certain things.
Greg Hardy thought he could be the same Greg Hardy he’s been his entire career. He tells these same jokes two years ago no one bats an eye, but when you have the moniker of a domestic abuser, you simply can’t speak that way anymore.
He should know better than that, but obviously he didn’t. Jerry Jones doesn’t really care about what you think, he is always going to come to the defense of his players. Even though Jason Garrett said the comments were unacceptable, Jones essentially said today they weren’t a big deal.
On The Fan, Jerry Jones says most comments are going to go the wrong way if they have any positivity or aggressiveness. i.e. Greg Hardy

On The Fan, Jerry Jones says Elizabeth Taylor made her complete life around people saying she was pretty. i.e. Gisele Bundchen

To be fair, Gisele is a model, so saying she is attractive isn’t a crime, but it is the messenger, not the message. If Steve Smith says that, once again people laugh and move on. Because Hardy probably got away with severely beating a woman, he shouldn’t be saying things like that. If he chooses to do so any way, he has to deal with backlash.
