If you can’t make the long trip to England, don’t fret because a trip to Mexico to watch your favorite NFL team could be in the works.
According to CBS Sports, the growing sentiment after leaving the owners meeting was that there would likely be regular season games played in Mexico City next year.
The owners did vote to expand the league’s international series of games, and while there were several issues that created problems when the 49ers and Cardinals played in Mexico City in 2005, there is a high level of confidence within league circles that a series of games there over time would be highly successful, both financially and otherwise.
“It’s going to happen next year,” said one high-ranking club official, “we just don’t know which teams it’s going to be yet.”
The Raiders, Steelers and Cowboys are among the most popular teams in Mexico, but of that group Oakland is far and away the most likely to be cajoled into parting with a regular season game and playing instead in Azteca Stadium. The NFL will also continue to play at least three games in London in 2016 as well, though those contracts have not been finalized yet.
The Raiders and Cowboys are beloved, and should definitely be considered.
