Depending on who you believe the Redskins have either broken off talks completely with Kirk Cousins or talks are going progressing at a very nice pace.
It doesn’t change the issue that a game of chicken is being played.
No one knows what type of QB Kirk Cousins will be in the future. Is he truly a franchise quarterback who can lead a team to the Super Bowl or is he just a guy who got hot against a lot of bad teams, in a bad division late in the season?
Redskins never beat a team with a winning record last year, if they give Cousins huge money and he turns out to be a bust it will set the franchise back.
If you are Cousins you know the NFL stands for Not For Long, so you want as much guaranteed money as you possibly can now.
The franchise tag is about $20 million for quarterbacks, but if Cousins flames out next year, then that $20 million will be the most he ever gets, so it makes sense he tries to get a long-term deal done if he can.
The situation has to be cleared up before March hits because that is when Cousins will become a free agent and trust me someone will throw big money at him.
