The plea deal that Darren Sharper was being offered was amazing. Even though Sharper would be pleading guilty to raping and drugging multiple women in different states, he could have been out of jail in less than 10 years.
But, a federal judge has stepped in to say that is way too light of a sentence for the crimes he committed.
Here are the details.
U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo said at a hearing Thursday (Feb. 18) that the approximately 10-year sentence included as part of the deal Sharper struck with the government deviates too far from federal sentencing guidelines. Those guidelines would put the 2010 Super Bowl winner behind bars for 15 to 20 years.
Sharper entered the a guilty plea May 29, 2015, as part of a global deal to resolve allegations that he had drugged and/or sexually assaulted nine women in four states between August 2013 and January 2014. Milazzo referenced a pre-sentencing report she is allowed to consider during sentencing that alleges there might have been up to 16 victims between January 2010 and May 2014.
The judge wants the sentence to be closer to 15 years in jail (still light in my opinion). Sharper will be back in court in March for final sentencing or deciding if he wants to go to trial.
