A fan at the Tampa Bay Rays game was struck by a foul ball, hit by Steven Souza Jr, that fell through a gap in the netting between the plate and dugout.
Souza went into the crowd as the game was stopped so the fan could be taken out on a stretcher via the field. The fan was reportedly sitting in the 2nd row behind additional netting, but a small triangle shaped opening allowed the ball to fall through.
If you’re going to protect 99% of the area, why not protect 100%? It is kind of the purpose of a net, to protect, not kind of protect.
Thanks to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times for all the details from today’s game.
