There will be some minor spoilers.
You have probably seen the horrific reviews of DC’s Suicide Squad, but I have always been the type of person that gives a movie a clean slate and make my own opinion.
Is it in the upper echelon of Superhero movies, no it is not, but it isn’t the worst one I have ever seen, nawwww.
The problem with the movie is the plot and having too many characters. You have to have a strong plot with ensemble cast and frankly half the movie is just flashbacks (which are more entertaining than the rest of the movie). They didn’t need Captain Boomerang, Katana, Slipknot and they probably could have gotten away with not having Killer Croc (he didn’t really do much of anything).
They have repetitive scenes that make no sense at all, such as.
The main villain The Enchantress hooks up her brother with another body. At that point they should just be together right? Nope.
Instead somehow she just randomly goes back to being Dr. June Moone. While her brother is going wild, the “good guys” bring Dr. Moone to the subway where they urge her to becomes Enchantress again, where she just ends up with her brother like before. Why didn’t she just stay with him originally?
Those are scenes that could have went to Jared Leto’s Joker.
The Enchantress says she is building a weapon for 2 hours, when in reality she is just taking over a satellite which has been done in movies since we had satellites in the sky. The weapon she was building was never actually shown, she needed Waller’s brain to show her where the secret satellite was, but in an earlier scene she just stole plans like that from another government in under a second. Overall it was just a bad, dumb plot with terrible writing at times.
But, I am not here to tell you everything that is wrong with the film but to point out some of the good things.
Which there was more than a few and can be built upon in the future.
1- Margot Robbie nails the Harley Quinn role
Honestly, a movie focused on just the Joker (more on him in a second) and Harley Quinn would have been a better movie than the Suicide Squad.
Harley Quinn some would say is an even more complex character than the Joker. She wasn’t born crazy, she is super intelligent and there is some good in her. Robbie who is proving to be quite the actress nails every scene that she’s in. It is a pity she wasn’t the spotlight character, but she is the one who steals the show.
Ask 100 people would they rather see a Suicide Squad 2 or a Harley Quinn-Joker spinoff based on how this movie ended, I am confident 100 would say the latter not the former.
