This man stole an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes in broad daylight. It was clearly another day in the life of New York City.
The fact that this even happened just demonstrates that someone wasn’t doing their job and, in addition, this man must’ve been observing how this goes down for a while. This is a subject I can chime in on only because my parents worked in the Diamond District and security there is extremely tight when it comes to these golden flakes. Some got caught trying to steal flakes by putting them under their nails or in their gum. In other words, by any means necessary. One man got away with it as he stole 86 pounds of gold flakes that is nearly worth $1.6 million dollars.
Just because a person wasn’t by it doesn’t mean cameras weren’t. The surveillance footage shows how he went right up to the truck and then fled the scene.
The unidentified thief swiped the 5-gallon metal bucket off the back of the vehicle on Sept. 29 when a guard briefly went to the truck’s cab to reportedly retrieve his cellphone.
The incident occurred in broad daylight on West 48th Street in New York City’s Midtown section. Police say the suspect likely didn’t know what the bucket contained.
Police say the thief lugged the gold flakes up the street, taking an hour to complete what would normally be considered a 10-minute walk. He then hopped into a white van and fled.
The suspect is believed to be hiding out in Florida.
This is one risky move and the suspect definitely knows what is in the bucket.
