Perception sometimes is better than reality.
Perception says that Jon Gruden is one of the greatest coaches of all-time and that is the reason why every offseason teams chase him. It usually ends up with Gruden getting a raise from ESPN, but this time it looks like the Raiders have done enough to woo him back.
Jon Gruden is expected to become the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders; a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
A contract including an ownership stake would have to be approved by NFL owners. The Raiders also still have to interview candidates for the job and meet the requirements of the Rooney Rule.
If you are giving ownership, one would think Gruden is indeed the coaching GOAT, but if that is the case the numbers are indeed lying.
Gruden had a very good record with the Raiders (38-26) and if not for the bogus tuck rule might have had a Super Bowl win with them. After a dispute, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Bucs who had been turned from laughingstocks to contenders thanks to Tony Dungy. His first year there they go 12-4 and win the Super Bowl.
He gets credit for that, but that was also in 2002, from that point on he only had two playoff appearances which resulted in two playoff losses.
Gruden last coached a decade ago, and a lot has changed in the NFL since then. The question begs is he fool’s gold or can he bring the Raiders back to glory?
Only time will tell.
