A few weeks ago, a Baton Rouge police officer was charged with negligent homicide in a crash that injured a woman and killed her baby. New details are now emerging as the mother, Brittany Stephens, 20, is being faced with the same charges for not securing the baby’s seat belt.
The arrest report for Stephens stated on Tuesday that the seat was not secured properly and she did not adjust the straps in the seat for the baby’s height.
Baton Rouge police released a statement regarding the charges against Stephens.
“Lack of securing the seat to the vehicle and the loose straps are a contributing factor in the death.”
This evidence was enough to conclude “gross negligence.” Stephens pleaded her case by saying that she wasn’t the driver of the car and that she did secure the baby properly.
Full charges against Stephens include one count of negligent homicide and a seat belt violation. Three other people in the car with her were handed traffic citations.
