There are a few things that viewers should look out for when watching the Josesito Lopez vs Keith Thurman fight tonight. I’ve broken them down for you here:
1. Ring Rust
Keith Thurman has been out of the ring since March 2017, when he won a split-decision fight vs Danny Garcia. After this fight, Thurman underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow and then suffered what was described as a deep bruise to his left hand, both keeping him from fighting. Thurman may come into this fight with some hesitancy as a result of his long layoff. It will be interesting to see if the man in the ring will be the Keith Thurman that we are accustomed to, or a more reserved Keith Thurman.
2.The Early Rounds
One thing that can be said about Keith Thurman is that he doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses. However, it has been noted that Thurman can be slow to get into his fights, using the first few rounds to feel out his opponent. If Josesito Lopez wants to win this fight, he must be ready to get to work from the moment the bell rings. Winning early rounds puts Josesito in the best position to be able to pull this fight out should it go the distance.
3. Close Rounds
As the saying goes, “to be the champ, you’ve gotta BEAT THE CHAMP”. Keith Thurman currently holds a WBA welterweight title and prior to his injuries was largely considered the best welterweight boxer in the sport. Typically, in boxing, any close rounds will be awarded to the champ. Josesito will need to have clear and convincing control to be given the benefit of the rounds. Look for flurries from Josesito Lopez in the last 10-20 seconds of any close rounds to solidify in the Judge’s minds that he is the winner of any close rounds.
