Creighton men’s basketball team are 14-6 in the Big East and have plans to reunite with their head coach.
“Creighton reinstated men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott for all team activities, including this week’s Big East tournament, the school announced on Monday. McDermott was suspended after using the word “plantation” while speaking to his players after a loss to Xavier on Feb. 27. Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said in a statement the remarks were “egregious” and that he consulted the players and others about the remarks to come up with a decision,” per The Athletic.
“Through his immediate apology, ownership of his actions, difficult dialogue with his team, and more, Coach McDermott has demonstrated a commitment to grow,” Rasmussen said. “I believe his apology, his commitment to grow from this, to learn, and to regain the trust of his student-athletes and others impacted by his words. From our conversations, he understands that forgiveness must be earned, and he is willing to work for it.”
Using plantation as an analogy to keep players motivated without question was racist.
If this was a Black coach who said something inappropriate, reinstatement wouldn’t be an option.
