I remember the day after Aaron Hernandez was found not guilty in his second murder trial, I asked an NFL executive if, by some crazy way, he could win an appeal on his original murder conviction, would a team sign him.
Without hesitating, he said YES.
The only time NFL teams will wash their hands of you for criminal activity is if your talent isn’t what it used to be. If Christian McCaffrey did what Ray Rice had done, he would have gotten another shot in the league.
At the moment, we don’t know what the end game is for Deshaun Watson. He has 22 civil cases pending. He has 10 criminal complaints that a grand jury will decide how to handle. He has barely practiced all season and was last spotted on vacation with his girlfriend, Jilly Anais.
All that doesn’t matter to two franchises that feel they are in desperate need of a franchise QB.
Reports are that both the Eagles and Dolphins are prepared to make offers for Watson before the trade deadline, which is November 2nd. They are willing to roll the dice that, at least for this year, Watson will be able to play while his legal situation is worked out.
The NFL will be in an interesting position because right now, because the Texans aren’t playing him, they don’t have to make any decisions on him, but what happens if, say the Eagles get him in the thick of the season, and they make a run to the playoffs?
I am sure the teams interested in trading for him will want some clarification on what the NFL plans to do with Watson, but for now, he is cleared to play whenever he wants to. The Texans getting tired of the drama, are now taking offers, if they can get three first-round picks, they should probably take the offer and run.
