Basketball is one of the most widely enjoyed sports around the globe. Major leagues are present in almost every country, and the sport continuously prospers with strong support from enthusiastic fans of different age groups and genders.
We have seen more court moves from NBA legends like LeBron James and Michael Jordan. In the present generation, many basketball players are making strides, mirroring the achievements of many basketball heroes in the past.
Let’s get to know this new breed of basketball idols and see what they have proven so far!
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Known as GA, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder as point guard/shooting guard. At age 24, Alexander has already played for the Canadian national team in the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in 2016 and won silver during the event.
In college basketball, Alexander played for the Kentucky Wildcats of the University of Kentucky and was picked 11th overall by Charlotte Hornets in the 2018 NBA Draft. On the same day, he was traded to Los Angeles Clippers. His collegiate team was the second-winningest in the NCAA (8 titles) and has dominated NCAA Basketball National Championship odds during their championship games.
GA was named the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during his rookie year before he was traded to Oklahoma City Thunder in July 2019. His recent career highlights include the 2023 NBA All-Star and 2023 All-NBA First Team.
Anthony Edwards
Anthony DeVante Edwards, dubbed the “Ant-Man,” is a 21-year-old American professional basketball player born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves as a shooting guard since 2000. He also played college basketball with the Georgia Bulldogs at the University of Georgia.
Playing for his university, he earned the SEC Freshman of the Year title during his freshman season. Edwards was selected as the first overall pick by his current team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, in the 2020 NBA draft.
In 2019, he was awarded the McDonald’s All-American. He earned the SEC Rookie of the Year and Second-Team All-SEC the following year. In 2021, he received the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He was also named the 2023 NBA All-Star.
Luka Doncic
At age 23, Luka Doncic has proven he is the greatest Slovenian professional basketball player. He plays point guard in Dallas Mavericks. He also played for the national team of Slovenia. His exceptional size, standing 6’7 and 230 lbs., made him a powerful position-less guard (guard, shooting guard, and small forward).
Doncic also played for Real Madrid from 2015 to 2018, and he was named “El Niño Maravilla” (The Wonder Boy) by Marca, a Spanish newspaper.
In the NBA, Doncic was the youngest player to record triple-doubles and 35-point triple-doubles in succession. In the playoffs, he was the youngest player to record a 40-point triple-double in a playoff game and hit a buzzer-beater at age 21.
A few of his long list of career highlights are the following: 4× All-NBA First Team (2020–2023), 4× NBA All-Star (2020–2023), NBA Rookie of the Year (2019), and NBA All-Rookie First Team (2019).
Jayson Tatum
Born on March 3, 1998, the 25-year-old Jayson Tatum has become 4× NBA All-Star from 2020 to 2023. He plays small forward for Boston Celtics. He played for the Duke Blue Devils of Duke University in college basketball and earned the ACC All-Freshman team and the Third-team All-ACC in 2017. He also played for team United States in the 2020 Olympic Games and earned gold.
Tatum also played for the national team in the FIBA U19 World Championship in 2015 and FIBA U17 World Championship in 2014, winning first place in both games. His most recent honors and awards were, NBA All-Star Game MVP in 2023, and 2× All-NBA First Team in 2022 and 2023.
Tyrese Haliburton
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tyrese Haliburton has become one of the most accomplished young basketball stars we know today. At age 23, Haliburton plated for the United States basketball delegation in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup, where they won gold. He played for the Iowa State Cyclones of Iowa State University in college basketball.
Presently, Haliburton plays for the Indiana Pacers as a point guard/shooting guard. He also played for the Sacramento Kings from 2020 to 2022. A few of his notable achievements were NBA All-Star 2023, NBA All-Rookie First Team 2021, and Second-team All-Big 12 in 2022.
Jaren Jackson Jr
Center/Power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. is a 23-year-old American professional basketball player who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies. Jackson is also known as the “Block Panther” and his Initials JJJ.
In the 2018 NBA draft, Jackson was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the fourth overall pick. In college, he played for the Michigan State Spartans of Michigan State University, where he earned the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
The most recent addition to his trophy shelf were the NBA All-Star (2023), NBA Defensive Player of the Year (2023), 2× NBA All-Defensive First Team (2022, 2023), and the 2× NBA blocks leader (2022, 2023).
