Stephen Curry has changed basketball since he first made it to the championship game. His creative use of the three-point line has transformed the game and evoked powerful feelings in spectators. He is acknowledged as the greatest shooter in history. Curry became embroiled in yet another heated discussion as the NBA’s storyline dramatically changed and player positions changed.
One in which he would compete against the legendary Magic Johnson for the coveted title of “Greatest Point Guard of All Time.” Recently, athletes like Shaquille O’Neal and Andre Iguodala have argued that Steph is their best PG, surpassing Magic.
The legends recognize Steph Curry’s influence and originality in his game even if he does not fit the stereotypical image of a point guard. If Shaq’s position on the Baby-Faced Assassin wasn’t obvious before, his most recent deed makes it crystal apparent.
Shaq’s criticism of Stephen Curry strikes a chord
Curry thinks he is at the very top of the list of the greatest point guards in NBA history. Steph was asked if he is “the greatest point guard ever” in a recent interview with Gilbert Arenas on Gil’s Arena. Steph responds, “Yes. Magic and I are together. Is that even a conversation?”
Gilbert Arenas: "Are you the best point guard ever?"
Steph Curry: "Yes. It's me and Magic [Johnson] is that the conversation? … Obviously, I have to answer that way."

The clip caught attention quickly and created quite a buzz within a few hours. In an unexpected turn of events, few people choose to ignore the superstar of the Warriors’ team’s self-view. Even Shaquille O’Neal joined the cheering crowd and praised Curry in front of the crowd. He went one step further by sharing a post on his Instagram story (@shaq) from @bleacherreport.
Shaq named Steph as his favorite candidate in the debate just two months prior. Shaq typically carries a bag of amusing quips and exudes a contagious personality. But his assessment of Curry seems well-founded and something he will stand by.
In 2023, has Curry actually surpassed Magic Johnson?
A well-known name in American sports media is Colin Cowherd. He has starred in programs at ESPN, Fox Sports, and other illustrious organizations over the years. Following the Warriors’ victory over the Sacramento Kings on the strength of Steph’s 50 points, Cowherd thought Curry had edged over Magic in the discussion.
On an episode of The Herd, Cowherd said : “Magic Johnson was not a great defender. He was not a great scorer. He had a very short career. And I think if you look at basketball over the next 100 years and beyond – the three-point shot makes Magic less significant,”
Curry’s development over the previous three years, according to Cowherd, stands out. He claimed that what sets him different in the constantly shifting world of teams is his ability to win titles.
Cowherd added that Magic’s height of 6’8 made his ball-handling abilities unique. He responded by pointing out how easily players like Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo move the ball down the court.
