In college football, the hip-drop tackle was the buzz of the weekend after Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a leg injury.
After that similar kind of tackle, Ravens tight end Mark Andrews will likely need surgery on his ankle and miss the remainder of the season. As a result, the tackle gained attention in the NFL.
Because the “hip drop” tackle has a propensity to injure lower body parts, it has become a contentious play in the NFL. It appears that defensive players will now face severe sanctions for it, since the league plans to outlaw it this offseason.

The NFL considered outlawing the hip-drop tackle last season but decided against it. Finding a different method for a player pursuing the ball carrier to make a tackle without endangering the opponent’s momentum or ability to score by falling forward is the challenge.
