Arthur Smith, who was fired by the Atlanta Falcons organization on Sunday night, is expected to receive a massive payment that will involve no work at all.
Following the Falcons’ defeat to the New Orleans Saints, Amith was fired nearly immediately; in fact, the news spread fast enough to be featured in the Sunday Night Football post-game show.
The Falcons finished the season with a 7-10 record, their third straight season without making the playoffs. They have missed the postseason six times in a row.

Smith was hired to turn things around, so his termination doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t get paid; NFL coaching contracts are fully guaranteed, and teams are required to uphold them whether or not they decide to retain the coach on.
The Falcons will therefore be stuck paying him his compensation; however, if he decides to do them a favor after being dismissed, they may choose to opt for a reduced buyout.
