NBA MVP Rankings: Mavs’ Luka Doncic Advances; Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic Stays Top Pick

Superstar Luka Doncic of the Mavericks is still one of the leading contenders for the 2024 NBA MVP title after climbing the weekly ladder.

There are roughly 15 games remaining for several teams in the 2023–24 regular season, which is coming to an end. Thanks to his averages of 26.0 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 9.1 assists while leading the Denver Nuggets to a top-seeded 47-20 record, Nikola Jokic appears to be the front-runner in the MVP competition.

The standout player for the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic, who averages 34.3 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.0 rebounds, is still on the short list of contenders. Doncic climbed up to fourth place on the NBA.com weekly MVP ladder, surpassing Boston Celtics player Jayson Tatum.

Doncic is behind Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. Doncic’s biggest obstacle is the Mavs’ eighth-place finish in the Western Conference standings. Michael C. Wright wrote,

“Although Dallas remains eighth in the West, the Mavericks captured four straight victories before Thursday’s loss to Oklahoma City with Doncic lighting up the scoreboard for triple-doubles in three of those four outings,”

“He strung together seven consecutive triple-doubles before Wednesday’s win over Golden State. A hamstring injury sidelined the 25-year-old for the loss Thursday in Oklahoma City. The MRI on that left hamstring came back clean, but he’ll be re-evaluated over the weekend.”

If Doncic plays on Sunday afternoon against Jokic and the Nuggets, he can put on a solid show. After missing Thursday’s 126-119 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder due to left hamstring pain, the Slovenian superstar took part in Saturday’s practice.

On December 18, Doncic recorded 38 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in his previous game against the Nuggets; nonetheless, the Mavs lost 130-104 in a blown-out way.
