Who will be in charge of San Francisco‘s defense in 2024 has been determined.
According to reports cited by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Saturday, the 49ers plan to choose defensive passing game/nickel cornerbacks coach Nick Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator.
After one season, the team parted ways with Steve Wilks despite San Francisco’s march to Super Bowl LVIII. Sorensen takes over for Wilks. In terms of points allowed per game (17.5) and running yards (89.7), the 49ers were third at the end of the 2023 campaign.
What does Nick Sorensen bring in his new role ?
Sorensen’s hiring is expected to preserve consistency on a defense that is anchored by cornerback Charvarius Ward, linebacker Fred Warner, and pass rusher Nick Bosa. However, with Chase Young, Javon Kinlaw, and Tashaun Gipson all to become free agents this offseason, general manager John Lynch will need to put in some work to maintain that excellent defense.

45-year-old Sorensen has been coaching in the NFL since 2013 after moving to San Francisco in 2022 as a defensive assistant. Sorensen joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 as an assistant special teams coach and helped develop a team that would go on to win Super Bowl XLVIII. During his tenure, he had the roles of secondary coach and assistant defensive backs coach.
