The Jets’ 2024 off-season was going well, with nearly every player taking part in the optional organized practice sessions. Not only did star quarterback Aaron Rodgers show up, but he was also commended by his teammates for his professionalism and hard effort on the field. But when the Jets opened their mandated minicamp, A-Rod disappeared out of thin air, and everything went south. The NFL community hasn’t received this decision well, with many criticizing Rodgers for being egotistical in leaving the team.
For example, in the most recent episode of First Things First, Chris Broussard and Nick Wright chastised Rodgers for having the wrong priorities.
Nick Wright blasts Aaron Rodgers
Wright said that although he understands players missing time because of financial constraints or health issues, he doesn’t get Aaron’s justification for missing the required minicamp. The four-time MVP was dubbed a “phony” for missing it.
He asked the former quarterback for the Green Bay Packers why he had made two reservations and gave the non-football event priority. According to Wright, a seasoned team leader wouldn’t act in this manner. In a similar vein, Broussard referred to Rodgers’ antics as absurd and branded him as “selfish” for skipping a required event.
Although everyone adores Rodgers, they both think that this sets a poor precedent for the forthcoming season because his absence will be felt. It casts the Jets and him in a negative light. He said,
“Every other notable player who isn’t at mandatory minicamp, we know why — money. Aaron Rodgers double-booked. This wasn’t last second event. This wasn’t the birth of the child, those things can be excused. This was — I have two things going on in life and I am choosing the other. That is not sustainable.”
Broussard said,
“It’s a mandatory practice. They are supposed to be there. Aaron Rodgers is the one being selfish. This is ridiculous. If it’s not family or health-related, then you should be at practice. There is no other excuse. This set such a bad tone. This makes him look hypocritical.”
