For the Colorado Buffaloes and head coach Deion Sanders, the 2023 college football season fell short of expectations. Even while there were improvements, many still thought the season was below average. Now, Coach Prime is putting everything on the line to return with a bang in the next campaign. But according to Rachel Nichols, a FOX Sports commentator, the Buffaloes would be successful with just six or seven victories.
In a recent episode of FS1’s “UNDISPUTED,” Nichols offered her viewpoint, even though it’s unlikely that Deion Sanders and his “leaders” and “dawgs” in Colorado are planning for a meager six or seven-win season.
Rachel Nichols offers her take on Deion Sanders
She clarified that considering college football programs don’t change much over night, Colorado would benefit from this victory total. She said,
“I think they will improve this year. I can see them winning six or seven games, and that’s okay. College football programs, in particular, are not turned around in one year. They’re just not. You need too much depth across too many positions. There’s a culture you have to set that’s different from pro teams or any other sport.”
Given that the squad won four games under Sanders’ leadership the previous season and one before, it’s wise to have reasonable expectations.
Nichols went into detail about how developing a championship-caliber team takes years of preparation, intensive nurturing, and support from a college football department. She made note of the functions that recruitment and transfer portals play in fostering program development. She believes that in the 2024 season, Deion Sanders won’t have to contend with heavyweights like Michigan and Alabama.
Rather, she advises him to concentrate on winning those six or seven games and having the best season any coach has ever had with the team. Nichols emphasized that “it’s about building the program” and that it cannot be a “overnight success.” Skip Bayless and Keyshawn Johnson, her co-hosts, appear to have differing viewpoints on the subject.
