While attending NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Garland shared the following with Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com: “I don’t want to be traded,” “Those are just rumors.”
After the Cavs were eliminated from the playoffs a few months ago, those speculations gained traction, and The Athletic published a post-mortem article outlining the necessity of splitting up the backcourt eventually.
Is Darius Garland getting a contract extension ?
The story specifically stated that in the event that Donovan Mitchell decided to re-sign with the Cavaliers, Garland’s agents would look for a new home for their client.
Mitchell received an extension, but the trade request for Garland was denied. According to Cleveland.com, Garland said,
“It’s always good to see one of our guys get the money they deserve and know he’s going to be back with us for a while,” “I was excited. I was excited for him.” “It sounds really good,” “A lot of spacing and a lot of room for me and (Mitchell) and all of the other guys to be able to thrive.”
All indications are that the Cavaliers, led by Mitchell, Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, will be able to turn things around. This was said in Kenny Atkinson’s press conference upon taking over as head coach. The Cavs might be able to solve their backcourt rotation issue with Atkinson’s new offensive scheme.
