A Lincoln University track and field athlete was fatally stabbed early Monday, and his girlfriend, also a student-athlete at the school, has been charged in his death, authorities said.
Kevaughn Goldson, 23, of Kingston, Jamaica, died after being stabbed in the chest and back during a domestic dispute at an off-campus residence, according to court documents.
Denita Atiyah Jackson, 27, of Jefferson City, called 911 around 1 a.m. Monday to report that she had stabbed Goldson, police said.
Jackson told investigators she returned home from work early because she wasn’t feeling well and found Goldson in her roommate’s locked bedroom, leading her to suspect infidelity. A confrontation followed, during which Goldson allegedly choked her, according to a probable cause statement. Jackson said she grabbed a knife from under the bed and stabbed him once in the back and then in the chest before calling authorities.
Goldson was airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia, where he died during surgery, officials said.
Jackson, a senior and sprinter on the university’s track team, was arrested at the scene. Cole County prosecutors charged her with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. She was being held Tuesday in the Cole County Jail without bond.
Goldson, a senior sprinter on the men’s track and field team, was remembered by Lincoln University as a standout athlete. The university said in a statement that it is providing support to students and staff affected by the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details were immediately available.
