Small-town politics can be dramatic, but the story around former mayor Misty Roberts sounds less like a council meeting and more like a reality show that nobody asked for.
Roberts, once the proud mayor of her town, is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons. And the latest chapter in the saga has people shaking their heads so hard they might need neck braces.
First came the scandal that knocked her reputation off a cliff. Roberts was accused of having a relations with one of her son’s friends at a party. Yes, that sentence is just as awkward as it sounds.
But the situation got even darker.
According to reports tied to the case, Roberts’ children were allegedly abused by a man she was involved with. The accusations paint a disturbing picture of what was happening behind the scenes while she was busy trying to maintain her public image.
Enter her ex-husband.
Duncan Clanton reportedly fought hard to keep their kids away from the man William Andrew Cronce he believed was dangerous. Imagine trying to explain that situation to a judge: “Your Honor, I’m not trying to win a custody argument. I’m trying to stop chaos.”
The shared children of disgraced Louisiana mayor Misty Roberts and her ex-husband allegedly suffered abuse at the hands of the ex-leader’s former lover – who later wound up dead, according to court records exclusively reviewed by The Post.
“I am fearful for my children’s safety because William Andrew Cronce does have access to weapons/handguns, he is bold enough to publicly voice/threaten suicide and has shown stalking behavior with the mother of my children,” Clanton wrote in a Jan. 24, 2024, letter pleading with a Beauregard Parish court judge to grant the protection order on behalf of his daughter, then 10 years old, and son, 13.
In one particularly troubling example of Cronce’s “instability,” during an argument with Roberts, the laborer allegedly “exited the house by loudly shouting in front of [the kids] that their Mother needs to learn to shut her ‘c—k sucker’, if she knows what’s good for her,” Clanton claimed, explaining that his son had told him about the incident.
Cronce had also posted on Facebook threatening suicide following a breakup from Roberts – and was later found by police “incapacitated and unconscious with a gun on his person,” the ex-husband further alleged.
“If he is brave enough to take his own life, what is to stop him from shooting Misty, our kids and himself?” Clanton wrote.
Cronce “has a history of instability and alcoholism that is abusive in relationships. Our children told me this is specifically the reason why [his and Roberts] relationship ended, because their Mother didn’t want them to be raised in a household that way.
“Now, they are back together and our children, in my opinion, are forced to witness a toxic relationship,” Clanton said.
A mayor, a scandalous relationship, a questionable boyfriend, custody fights, abuse allegations. It’s the kind of storyline that makes people ask one very simple question: “How did things get this messy?”
On top of everything else she wanted her son to fight his best friend she was sleeping with.

Misty Roberts, 43, got into a heated spat with her son just moments after he confronted her over her antics at his own booze-filled birthday party back in 2024 when she was serving as DeRidder mayor.
“Go fight your friend. He’s the one who did it,” Roberts allegedly screamed at her son, according to the victim’s testimony.
Roberts’ political career? Gone. Her reputation? Hanging on by a thread thinner than a campaign promise during election season.
