Bryce Underwood has a long season ahead. The box score that led to Michigan football’s victory in Week 1 generated more questions than it provided answers. Even though he made it apparent that patience has a limited lifespan, a college football season-opening scare against Western Michigan revealed issues that Kyle Whittingham isn’t ready to attribute to a single player. In order to survive, Bryce Underwood heaved a Hail Mary, and his head coach used his postgame remarks to highlight the differences between job security today and tomorrow.
Kyle Whittingham, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, walks to Michigan Stadium with his squad prior to their game versus Western Michigan.
To defeat a Western Michigan team that won ten games and the MAC title the previous season, Michigan required a review, a granted extra second, and a 47-yard touchdown throw to JJ Buchanan. In addition to leading the Wolverines on the ground with nine carries for 47 yards and a rushing touchdown, Underwood finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
After then, Whittingham did not avoid the obvious question. Underwood is the starter “right now,” he said, but the position isn’t assured to remain that way. He stated:
“It’s not something that’s infinite”. “At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner, and we’ve got to see improvement.”
“It’s unfortunate and disappointing because we see him every day and he’s been very sharp all through fall camp”. “I don’t have a great explanation right now.”

He added that Underwood is not solely to blame for the coaching staff’s inability to establish a rhythm following the initial drive. After Michigan defeated Western Michigan 13–12 at Michigan Stadium, 19-year-old quarterback Bryce Underwood left the field.
Whittingham’s description of Underwood’s fall camp, where the sophomore allegedly looked sharp almost every day, contrasted with this tone. Whittingham was unable to provide a convincing explanation for Saturday’s events.
A closer look reveals that Underwood’s final figures are worse. He lost a fumble in the fourth quarter that allowed Western Michigan to score a field goal and threw a pick-six prior to halftime. Almost one-third of his passing yards came from his incredible touchdown pass.
