Game 1 didn’t exactly go how Kevin Durant drew it up. The Rockets took the loss, the vibes were off, and somewhere in the chaos, a random Los Angeles Lakers fan decided it was their moment to shine. Spoiler alert: it was not.
Kevin Durant, also known as the CEO of “I Heard That,” was not in the mood.
Picture this. The game just ended, emotions are high, players are walking off, and then, boom, a Lakers fan starts chirping from the sidelines like they just dropped 30 points themselves. Bold strategy. Unfortunately for the fan, KD has never been the “ignore and walk away” type.
Durant turned, locked in, and delivered an x-rated verbal response that probably felt like getting crossed over without even touching the ball. Short, sharp, petty, efficient. The man didn’t need a microphone, he is the microphone.
Durant sat on the sidelines in street clothes as he witnessed LeBron James nearly put up a triple-double at age 41 to put away his team. Since the game was at the Lakers’ home arena, the fans were ecstatic about James’ performance, and one of them seemingly said something to Durant about it that triggered him.
A video has gone viral of Kevin Durant engaging in an apparently intense back-and-forth with a Lakers fan, who is behind the camera in the footage, yelling at the 37-year-old Rockets star. Durant was clearly not having any of it.
“Get that grown man d— out of your mouth,” Durant yelled. The 37-year-old was simply greeting Travis Scott and other people that he knew on the sidelines before leaving the arena. But the fan’s constant chatter from behind eventually got to the Rockets’ star.
“Keep that d— out of your mouth, you’re [inaudible] yourself,” Durant said.
In the end, the Rockets lost the game, but KD might have won the moment, because while the scoreboard said one thing, that brief exchange reminded everyone of a simple rule: if you talk to Kevin Durant, be ready for a reply.
And maybe, just maybe, sit down next time.
