Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been released from jail Wednesday after being arrested on several domestic violence charges. According to the Brown County District Attorney’s office in Wisconsin, the investigation is still “open and ongoing,” which means this story is far from over.

And just like that, Packers fans went from discussing touchdowns and fantasy football rankings to staring at legal updates like it’s a courtroom drama series.

The timing could not be messier. One minute you are preparing for training camp headlines, the next minute your franchise running back is making news for all the wrong reasons. The NFL really knows how to keep public relations departments working overtime.

“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision,” District Attorney David L. Lasee said in a statement. “Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued. Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date.”

Jacobs, 28, was booked Tuesday by the Hobart-Lawrence (Wisconsin) Police Department on charges of battery (domestic abuse, criminal damage to property), domestic abuse, disorderly conduct (domestic abuse, strangulation and suffocation), and intimidation of a victim.

The investigation remains active, there are many unanswered questions. For now, all eyes remain on Wisconsin authorities and what comes next but Jacobs through his attorney has denied all the allegations.

“We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him,” attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac said in a statement Wednesday. “As we previously stated, we encourage everyone to keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future.”

One thing is certain though. Packers fans were hoping for training camp optimism this summer. Instead, they got another reminder that NFL headlines can flip from sports page to crime report in record time.
