Andrew Gillum, a former Florida gubernatorial candidate, was arrested on drug possession charges in Alabama after police reportedly stopped him for driving erratically and discovered meth and marijuana in his car.

The former mayor of Tallahassee, who was previously regarded as a rising star of the Democratic Party and narrowly lost to Republican Ron DeSantis for governor in 2018, is currently facing legal issues.

On July 2, Gillum, 46, was taken into custody in Daphne, which is located on Alabama’s Gulf Coast around 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) east of Mobile.

According to the Daphne Police Department, he is accused of possessing marijuana and unlawfully possessing a prohibited narcotic. According to jail records, he was freed on July 3.

According to the Baldwin County Clerk of Court’s office, court records regarding Gillum’s case were not yet accessible. It took some time to find a lawyer who could represent him. The local district attorney’s office received a message requesting comment.

The politically charged Native Land Pod, which Gillum co-hosts, took home the 2025 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News and Information Podcast.

The podcast’s producing business received a message asking for feedback.

According to a news release from the Daphne Police Department, officers pulled over Gillum’s car at 10:45 p.m. and started a probable cause search after one of them saw a glass pipe on the center console.

According to authorities, they discovered three packets of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine and multiple rolled marijuana cigarettes.

Gillum, the mayor of Florida’s capital from 2014 to 2018, lost to DeSantis by less than 34,000 votes, narrowly missing out on becoming the state’s first Black governor.
