Conor McGregor’s long-awaited UFC return ended after just 69 seconds Saturday night, but video recorded before his fight against Max Holloway has led some fans to question whether the former two-division champion entered the octagon with an existing injury.
McGregor suffered an apparent right knee injury while attempting a jumping kick early in the UFC 329 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He landed awkwardly, fell to the canvas and was unable to continue, giving Holloway the victory by first-round technical knockout.

However, footage from the backstage preparation area showed McGregor briefly losing his balance and staggering while removing his shoes before walking to the octagon. The moment quickly circulated on social media, with some viewers speculating that McGregor’s knee or leg may have already been compromised before the fight began.
There is no confirmed evidence that McGregor entered the fight injured.
McGregor denied having any physical problems before the bout, saying he had been kicking, planting and jumping throughout his training camp and backstage before the fight.

“I had no injury or injuries going into the fight,” McGregor wrote on social media. “This came out of nowhere.”
McGregor described the aftermath of the injury as “hell” and said he was in a dark mental state following the disappointing end to his comeback.
UFC CEO Dana White also pushed back against the speculation. White said McGregor showed no obvious signs of an injury during fight week, including at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-in.
White said the early belief was that McGregor may have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, although an MRI and additional medical testing would be needed to determine the full extent of the injury.
The injury occurred during McGregor’s first UFC appearance since July 2021, when he broke his left leg during a loss to Dustin Poirier. McGregor was also forced to withdraw from a scheduled 2024 fight against Michael Chandler after suffering a broken toe in training.
Saturday’s injury involved McGregor’s right knee, rather than the left leg he previously broke.
Holloway recognized immediately that McGregor was seriously hurt and urged the referee to stop the fight. McGregor initially attempted to remain in the contest but could not stand or defend himself effectively.
The abrupt ending deprived fans of the anticipated rematch between two of the UFC’s most recognizable fighters. McGregor defeated Holloway by unanimous decision in their first meeting in 2013 despite suffering a torn left ACL during that bout.

Until McGregor’s medical results are released, questions about whether the injury began before he entered the octagon will remain speculation. The available footage may appear suspicious to some viewers, but both McGregor and White maintain that he was healthy before the opening bell.
