Social Media Reacts to Indiana Josh Hoover’s Bloody Nose

Indiana’s new quarterback did not ease into the post-Fernando Mendoza era. He walked into it with blood on his facemask.

No. 6 Indiana’s Josh Hoover took a violent facemask hit from a North Texas defender in the second quarter Saturday, left the play leaking blood from his nose, and stayed in the game. Three plays later, with blood still running down his face and onto his helmet, Hoover dropped a 9-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Becker to push the Hoosiers ahead 21-3.

Hoover, the TCU transfer replacing last season’s Heisman winner, was already having a clean debut before the hit. He opened the afternoon with a back-shoulder touchdown to Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh and was 7 of 8 for 100 yards and two scores by halftime, according to local reports tracking the first half. North Texas trailed 24-6 at the break.

The sequence that lit up social media was the facemask. A Mean Green defender grabbed Hoover’s helmet hard enough that it spun. Blood poured from his nose. Trainers did not pull him. He lined back up and threw the touchdown.

“Josh Hoover is LEAKING blood from his nose. North Texas defender nearly took his head off on a facemask penalty. Three plays later, Bloody Hoover finds Charlie Becker in the end zone,” wrote 247Sports Indiana beat reporter Jared Kelly.

FOX College Football posted the clip with a dry caption that captured the moment: “Just a bit of a facemask on Josh Hoover… He stayed in the game with blood pouring out his nose.” The post quickly became one of the day’s most-watched college football videos.

Yahoo Sports put the still image in front of a national audience: “Indiana QB Josh Hoover took a huge shot to the face on this sack. He stayed in the game despite blood pouring from his nose.”

The Athletic CFB framed the afternoon with the line that spread fastest among fans: “Indiana transfer QB Josh Hoover started the 2026 season with a battered and bloody face. But you should see the other team.”

OutKick’s Jon Root leaned into the toughness angle that college football still sells: “Indiana Hoosiers QB Josh Hoover is bleeding all over his nose, facemask & chinstrap, yet he’s not taking a play off. Football rocks.”

Local voices sounded the same note. Indianapolis sports anchor Angela Moryan called it “a nearly perfect first half. 7/8, 100 yards, 2 TD and one bloody face. Heckuva way to start in Bloomington.” Fan account @HoosierJen96, catching the tape a few minutes behind live, wrote: “I just saw them rip the helmet off Hoover, and the bloody face. Yikes! Welcome to IU.”

The hit was not a concussion scare that ended the afternoon. It was a bloody nose and a twisted helmet after a facemask that drew a flag. Hoover stayed on the field, completed the drive, and kept Indiana’s title-defense opener on schedule.

That is the first impression of the post-Mendoza quarterback in Bloomington: not a cautious handoff, not a quiet first half. A gusher, a penalty, and another touchdown.
