Jermell Charlo felt like he was supposed to reclaim his WBC Super Welterweight belt Sunday night, but Tony Harrison was injured due to an ankle injury during training. Charlo, already upset, thought he was robbed of the belt back in December, and took his frustrations out on Jorge Cota with Harrison watching ringside.
Cota took the fight only three weeks ago when Harrison got injured, so not much was expected and it showed. Charlo was in control the whole fight by using his speed to disrupt Cot’s somewhat awkward style.
Three rounds into the fight, Charlo delivers a vicious right hook that knocks Cota down and the fight really could have been stopped there due to Cota looking a little shaky after getting up but it wasn’t. A few seconds later, Charlo delivers a brutal right jab and referee Jack Nady instantly ends the fight.
This was one of the top knockouts of the year and after the fight, Charlo had a message for Harrison
“Tony Harrison in the building, that’s his fault. He got a chance to see what the Charlo’s do. I’m a much better fighter, and he’s lucky he didn’t accept this fight with me this time.”
