When Canelo is in stalker mini Mike Tyson mode, he is impossible to beat.
Caleb Plant had an excellent game plan, but he couldn’t keep Canelo off him, and eventually, like with everyone else, he got caught.
It was a left hook-uppercut that was the end for Plant.
Once Canelo smelled blood and knew that Plant couldn’t hurt him, he went in for the kill.
It was a mercy stoppage.
Plant showed an excellent jab, elite defense, and was getting off his shots first. He threw more punches, and up to the 11th round, he landed more punches.
The issue he had was his lack of power and the inability not to get trapped in the corners and on the ropes. Also, Canelo made an adjustment to go to the body. That slowed down Plant enough that he could finally land the left hook he had been trying to connect with cleanly all night.
Plant had taken the punch well early in the fight, but after so many body blows, your punch resistance isn’t what it used to be.
Plant, who has never been down in his career, made a crucial mistake when he was knocked down the first time by Canelo.
He was clearly buzzed and should have slowly taken his time before he rose to his feet and tried to get his barring. Instead, he got up quickly and ran to the corner, which didn’t help him clear the cobwebs. It just showed Canelo how hurt he really was.
Canelo wanted that knockout badly. Normally when he goes for the knockout, he is more reserved. This time he came in wild swinging until finally, he put Plant down for good.
It was a good fight, and Plant has nothing to be ashamed of. He was going blow for blow with the pound for pound King and almost won.
