The upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton is due to hit theaters August 14 and Universal Pictures has given us an in-depth look at the story behind the provocative rap group which changed not only music history but pop culture as a whole.
The group broke onto the scene in the late 80’s with politically charged lyrics calling out the powers that be in a melange of intellectually conscious energetic rhymes which resonated with the day’s youth. The group became West Coast musical icons with Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella leading the group from the streets of Compton to the top of the music charts.
Well before the days of Twitter, N.W.A was taking on hot-button political and social issues armed with sharp lyrics and no-holds-barred attitude, and then of course their name ‘n*ggas with attitude‘ fully proving why they were the “world’s most dangerous group”.
Straight Out of Compton tells the story of the group’s formation, their tumultuous rise to fame and the aftermath which resulted in them becoming cultural icons. All these years later and millions of albums sold, we will finally know the truth behind NWA.
