The extended trailer of the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me was released on Tuesday. Hip hop fans rejoice, the set designs look tremendous and the actors look like spitting images of their real life counterparts.
It’s good to see hip hop biopics being taken on by Hollywood. The stories of rap/cultural phenomenons like NWA, Biggie and Tupac are not just about hip hop. These artists shaped and influenced American popular culture. Just take a look around, from fashion styles, swag, language, to attitude.
The NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton had a $50M budget and grossed over $200M. It was also nominated for an Academy Award. All Eyez on Me has an estimated $40M budget and with Tupac as the subject, it’s sure to surpass that number and make a profit for all involved. It’s a shame Notorious didn’t have a similar budget. The Biggie biopic had a paltry $20M budget and while it grossed $44M, more money in the initial budget would have certainly solved some of its cinematic issues.
