Henry Ruggs III was in court this morning, and we now have more details on the fatal car accident that took the life of a 23-year-old woman, her dog and left Ruggs’ girlfriend in serious condition at the hospital.
The speed he was going at the time of impact was insane via TMZ Sports.
Henry Ruggs was traveling 156 MPH seconds before the fatal crash, slamming into the back of the Toyota at 127 MPH, killing a 23-year-old woman, this according to cops.
Ruggs appeared in court this morning for the first time … and had a gash on his face and was in a neck brace.
Of course, HR was admitted to the hospital after cops say he crashed his Corvette into a Toyota in Las Vegas at around 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday morning … and police called his injuries “serious” in documents.
Ruggs will be fighting against two felony charges when he has his day in court.
DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm and reckless driving.
If given the strongest sentences on both charges, he could be looking at 20+ years in jail.
Ex-Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was traveling 156 mph prior to the crash that claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman. Prosecutors said his blood-alcohol level was 0.16, which is twice the legal limit.
Ruggs’ made his first appearance before a judge in Las Vegas Justice Court at 9 a.m. Wednesday in a wheelchair.
Judge Joe Bonaventure set his bail at $150,000 although the state had requested a $1 million bond. Ruggs was ordered to abstain from alcohol and other controlled substances. He was ordered not to drive and to surrender his passport. Bonaventure said, in his career on the bench, he couldn’t recall seeing a speed that high.
Ruggs and his passenger, Kiara Je’nai Kilgo-Washington, with whom he has a young daughter, were hospitalized with “serious” injuries that police said did not appear life-threatening. The Toyota burst into flames, and the driver and her dog died, police said.
Ruggs’ attorney released this statement to the media.
“What we have here is a young man who has never been in trouble before,” Ruggs’ attorney David Chesnoff told the court.
Ruggs could also be charged with having an illegal firearm as well that could increase his time in jail to 46 years.
The Raiders immediately cut Ruggs and have started the process of scrubbing him completely from their history. The NFL likely won’t hand out any punishment since he isn’t on a team, but if a team and that is a BIG IF was interested in Ruggs in the future, he would likely be looking at a lengthy suspension from the league.
