WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes has reacted to her comments about Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlyn Clarke and according to her, she reached out to the star about their supposed beef and admitted that her comments about Clarke were a “mistake”.
The backlashes were too much for Swoopes and it could be the reason behind her reaching out to Clarke and then admitting wrongdoing publicly.
Swoopes prompted some backlash after claiming that neither Clark nor Angel Reese would have an immediate impact in the pros, adding that the former being on track to break Kelsey Plum’s NCAA scoring record was not impressive.
Speaking to former NBA star Gilbert Arenas on the ‘Gil’s Arena’ podcast, Swoopes inaccurately claimed that Clark had used up a COVID-19 year of eligibility, implying she was getting extra games to catch the record.
She also suggested that the college state was 25 years old and competing against other players who were around 20 while hoisting up 40 shots a game.
Well, the two might be in a better place now as Swoopes has disclosed having apologized to Clark for the comments she made about the possibility of breaking said record, which she has since done.
The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings has reported that Swoopes reached out to Clark over the phone.
“I won’t share what she said, I’ll leave that to her if she wants to share,” the four-time WNBA champion and three-time MVP was quoted as saying.
“But I will say, what I said to her was, ‘I made a mistake in saying it was your fifth year when it is your fourth.’ I have nothing but respect for what she has done for the game. If she wants to share what her response was and how that conversation went, I’ll leave that to her. But it was a really good conversation.”
Caitlyn Clarke is yet to react to Sheryl Swoopes’ apology but since it’s a public apology, she might not cough about it and let sleeping dogs lie.
