Vikings and J.J. McCarthy Agree to a Four-Year, $22 Million Guaranteed Rookie Contract

The next quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings is reportedly signed to a deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings reached an agreement on Friday on a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $21.85 million, which includes a signing bonus of $12.7 million. There is a five year option in the deal.

When Minnesota traded up to grab the Michigan product with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, it was evident that it was interested in him.

McCarthy was linked to the Vikings prior to the draft, so it was not surprising that they selected him. Additionally, they worked out in private with him, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

In the end, they only went up from No. 11 to No. 10 to acquire him, as other quarterbacks including Caleb Williams (No. 1), Jayden Daniels (No. 2), Drake Maye (No. 3) and Michael Penix Jr. (No. 8) went higher in the top eight.

J.J. McCarthy’s time with Wolverines

McCarthy’s tale, having guided the Michigan Wolverines to the College Football Playoff national championship, was among the more captivating ones heading into the draft. Though there were concerns regarding his overall ceiling, he was essentially terrific in his last season of college.

J.J. McCarthy completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions while adding 202 yards and three scores on the ground. Michigan’s success was primarily attributed to their potent defense and running back Blake Corum.

His ability to stay out of crucial mistakes was ideal when he was paired with Corum and the strong defense. If he can duplicate it, it will also be ideal in Minnesota because there is a wealth of skill around him once more.

McCarthy’s job as a rookie quarterback will be to get the ball into the hands of Aaron Jones, T.J. Hockenson, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison—a potent bunch of surrounding playmakers—and hope they don’t make any mistakes. He often performed it at Michigan, so the Vikings’ connection made perfect sense.
