Daniel Serafini, a Former MLB Pitcher, Was Found Guilty in a Murder Case in Lake Tahoe

Daniel Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, was convicted of killing his father-in-law and attempting to kill his mother-in-law at their Lake Tahoe home over four years ago.

Serafini was found guilty on Monday by a Placer County jury of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary in connection with the June 2021 shooting death of the couple in the neighborhood of Homewood.

In what authorities described as an execution-style murder, Serafini shot and killed 70-year-old Robert Spohr. Serafini shot Spohr’s wife, Wendy Wood, twice in the head, but she lived. Since then, she has died.

After two years of inquiry, authorities arrested Serafini and Serafini’s nanny-turned-lover, 33-year-old Samantha Scott, in connection with the attack in late 2023.

Scott was released from custody after entering a guilty plea to accessory after the fact in February. She acknowledged that on the day of the shooting, she took Serafini to his in-laws’ house in Tahoe. Scott is yet to get his sentence.

During the trial, Serafini’s wife, Erin Spohr, who is also the couple’s daughter, testified that she and Serafini had an open marriage and that she still has faith in him.

Since the shootings, Adrienne Spohr, her sister, has been fighting for justice for her parents.
