Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool, died in a car accident in Spain. The 26-year-old brother of the 28-year-old Portugal player, André, who plays professional football for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second division, was also in the vehicle. The tragedy happened close to Sanabria, Spain’s Zamora province.
The Zamora Provincial Council released the following statement: “Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the Consortium) responded.” “The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 25 years old. RIP.”
Jota announced on social media just five days prior that he had married Rute Cardoso, his longtime companion and the mother of his three sons, on June 22.
Before making her breakthrough at Paços de Ferreira in the top division of Portugal, Jota went through Gondomar’s youth system.
Despite never making a senior game under Diego Simeone, the dynamic forward’s form earned him a big move to Atletico Madrid in 2016. His finest performances returned when he returned home with Porto, and it was a bit of a coup when Jota was loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers, a team in the second division.
Jota carried his successful comeback into the Premier League, where he attracted Liverpool’s attention in 2020. He was a step above the rest of the Championship. The versatile attacker won the FA Cup, advanced to the Champions League final, and won the Premier League title the previous season during his five complete seasons on Merseyside.
