How Much Brian Kelly Will Take Home After Being Fired From LSU

LSU has fired head football coach Brian Kelly after a disappointing season that fell short of the program’s expectations, ending a tumultuous three-year tenure marked by inconsistency and controversy.

Kelly, who arrived from Notre Dame in 2022 with one of the most lucrative contracts in college football history, is owed a buyout estimated between $52 million and $60 million, according to multiple reports. His original 10-year, $95 million deal runs through 2031, making the separation one of the most expensive in SEC history.

Athletic director Scott Woodward met with LSU officials over the weekend to finalize the decision, which comes after the Tigers finished outside the College Football Playoff picture for the third straight year. Kelly went 27–12 at LSU, highlighted by an SEC West title in 2022 but followed by back-to-back seasons of underachievement.

The firing sets up one of the most high-profile coaching searches in the country, and several big names are already being mentioned as potential replacements.

Among the early candidates is Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who has rebuilt the Rebels into a perennial top-10 program and is regarded as one of the sport’s most creative offensive minds. Former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, who served as LSU’s offensive coordinator under Nick Saban from 2000 to 2006, could also draw interest given his familiarity with the program and SEC recruiting ties.

Other possible options include Tulane coach Jon Sumrall, whose success in New Orleans makes him a natural regional fit, and Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, a rising name in coaching circles. National analysts have also speculated that LSU could explore splashier hires such as Florida State’s Mike Norvell or even Dabo Swinney if Clemson’s struggles continue.

LSU, one of college football’s most prestigious jobs, has produced three national championships under three different coaches since 2003 — Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron. That history of quick turnarounds and championship expectations means Woodward will face heavy pressure to make a decisive, high-impact hire.

The Tigers are expected to move quickly, with an interim coach likely to be named in the coming days. Kelly, meanwhile, departs Baton Rouge with a massive payout and questions about whether his strict, corporate-style approach ever fit LSU’s culture of swagger and intensity.
