Robert Littal Speaks to Caleb Downs About Nick Saban and Ryan Day

Few players in college football history possess the unique perspective of Caleb Downs. The All-American safety spent his freshman season under the legendary Nick Saban at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State to play for Ryan Day.

In a recent interview with BlackSportsOnline founder Robert Littal, Downs offered a revealing look into the shared DNA of two of the sport’s most successful programs. When asked by Littal to identify the common traits that drive both Saban and Day, Downs pointed to a specific psychological edge—a relentless sense of urgency.

“I don’t want to say anxiousness, but the ability to say, ‘Every week we’re still going to have the same level of urgency and enthusiasm,'” Downs told Littal.

The standout defensive back explained that despite their different tactical backgrounds—Saban as a defensive mastermind and Day as an offensive guru—both coaches instill a fear of complacency in their locker rooms.

“Coach Day’s done a good job with our team this year… putting us in the right mindset every game,” Downs said. “It’s got to be every week we go get it. They aren’t going to give us an easy week.”

Downs, who was the SEC Freshman of the Year under Saban, noted that the now-retired Alabama coach maintained that intensity at an “elite level.”

“Week in, week out, being consistent with the mindset and urgency that we have,” Downs said. “Like somebody is going to take it from you.”

The “Championship or Bust” Parallel

While Downs highlighted the day-to-day urgency, the similarities between Saban and Day extend into the broader organizational philosophies of their programs. Both coaches operate in high-pressure environments where a season with 11 wins can still be viewed as a failure if it doesn’t result in a national championship.

Saban famously preached “The Process”—a philosophy that ignores the scoreboard and focuses entirely on executing the current play to perfection. Day has adopted a similar “internal scoreboard” mentality in Columbus. During the 2024 season, Day was noted for nitpicking execution details even during blowout victories, mirroring Saban’s famous perfectionism.

Both coaches also share an elite approach to talent acquisition. Saban consistently signed No. 1 recruiting classes, a standard Day has maintained at Ohio State, ensuring that practices are often as competitive as the games themselves.

For Downs, the transition from Tuscaloosa to Columbus has been seamless largely because the standard remains unchanged. The terminology may differ, but the demand for perfection—driven by that “anxiousness” Downs described to Littal—remains the engine behind the machine.
