Stephen A. Smith Says Jaylen Brown Isn’t Selling Out For Endorsements Like He Is

Things are never quiet when Stephen A. Smith decides to speak. Even silence somehow feels loud when he is involved. This time, the topic was Jaylen Brown, and more specifically, why he is not stacking endorsement deals at the same level as teammate Jayson Tatum.

And just like that, another NBA debate was born.

On his show, Smith delivered a sharp commentary that sounded less like a question and more like a courtroom closing argument. He pointed out that while Brown has postseason success, accolades, and a strong 10-year NBA career, he still has not reached the same commercial appeal as Tatum.

Translation: basketball is one thing, brand marketing is another game entirely.

“Despite your greatness throughout the years, being in six conference finals and two NBA Finals, winning a championship, winning a Finals MVP and a Conference Finals MVP, and establishing yourself as one of the best two-way players in the entire NBA — if not the world right now — all the endorsements go to your teammate Jayson Tatum. Why?” Smith noted.

“None of them are coming in your direction to the degree that you deserve. Why not? Shoe deals, endorsement deals, or whatever. You’re talking about me? Yeah, journalism, whatever. Hell, I got a commercial on TV right now with CarShield. Why don’t you have those?” Smith continued.

Smith believes Brown needs to be careful. Just because you are great on the court does not automatically mean corporations are lining up with blank checks and billboard campaigns.

“This is not to malign or insult or anything. It’s to point out, bro, there’s a host of things that people are saying in the world of corporate America and beyond. Why haven’t they embraced you more?” Smith added.

“Could it be that you’re dogged and so resolute in your approach to things that you never think you’re wrong? That you never think there’s something you can alter or modify to do things differently?” the veteran journalist stressed.

“Now, having said all of this, if you don’t understand or want to embrace the sincerity with which I’m saying what I’m saying and instead you want to engage in your level of negativity and insults and all of that stuff, be my guest. It doesn’t faze me. I’m not going to respond again,” Smith stated.

Within minutes, social media turned the segment into a full debate. Some people agreed with Smith, others defended Brown, pointing out that not every star needs the same branding path to be successful. And then there were the usual fans who just enjoy watching NBA discourse turn into chaos.
