A 17-year-old teenager remains hospitalized after being beaten into a coma during postgame chaos outside Madison Square Garden following the New York Knicks’ Game 4 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, according to New York Police Department officials and multiple reports.
Initial reports and social media circulation created confusion about the victim’s team allegiance, with some early accounts suggesting a Spurs fan was the victim of Knicks fans. However, authorities and eyewitness details confirm the victim was a Knicks fan (or neutral teen streamer caught in the melee) assaulted by individuals associated with Spurs fans.
The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday near West 35th Street and Eighth Avenue, just blocks from MSG, amid celebrations of the Knicks’ dramatic 107-106 comeback win. Police say the teen was approached by a group during a verbal dispute. A content creator livestreaming the scene reportedly shouted taunts including “Spurs in 7,” provoking the confrontation.
The victim was punched and kicked multiple times in the head and body, suffered a seizure at the scene, and fell into a coma. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was initially in critical condition. Updates indicate he has since emerged from the coma, is listed in critical but stable condition, and is expected to recover.
NYPD has released surveillance images of at least one suspect — described as wearing a black-and-white striped shirt and hoodie — and is seeking the public’s help in identifying others involved in what they are investigating as a gang assault. No arrests have been announced in this specific case as of Saturday.
He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he eventually came out of the coma and was listed in critical but stable condition, cops and sources said.
Arce told The Post Friday her son should be moved out of the ICU soon.
“He’s pulling through. He is responding,” Arce said. “The doctor said they will take him off the ventilator today. Hopefully he will be in a regular room tomorrow.”
This violence followed an earlier incident after Game 3, in which a 39-year-old man wearing a Spurs jersey was attacked and robbed by a group of Knicks fans in Midtown Manhattan. That victim was treated for injuries and released; police continue to seek suspects in that robbery-assault as well.
