New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo tumbled during a failed backflip attempt Saturday at Fanatics Fest in New York City, drawing widespread concern and criticism online just months after a season-ending leg injury.
Skattebo, recovering from an open tibia fracture, ruptured deltoid ligament and right ankle dislocation suffered in October 2025 against the Philadelphia Eagles, first showed off the surgical scar on his leg before launching into the flip. He lost control mid-air and crashed to the ground, narrowly avoiding what multiple observers described as a potential knee injury.
The 24-year-old former Arizona State star made the backflip his signature celebration during a promising 2025 rookie season that included multiple touchdowns and strong production before the injury cut it short after eight games. He had previously stuck a clean backflip after a home run at teammate Brian Burns’ celebrity softball game in late May 2026, which many viewed as a positive sign in his recovery.

This latest attempt did not go as planned. Video of the mishap quickly spread across X, where users mixed shock, dark humor and frustration over the risk taken by a player still working back from major surgery.
Accounts highlighted the near-miss. Daily Loud posted the clip with the caption “Cam Skattebo almost blows out his knee doing a backflip.” Another account wrote, “CAM SKATTEBO FAILED BACKFLIP… He’s currently recovering from a MAJOR leg injury.” A third noted he showed the scar “& almost gets hurt doing a backflip,” adding they could not imagine new Giants coach John Harbaugh’s reaction.
Some reactions turned sharper. One user posted, “Cam Skattebo does a back flip after showing off his scar from surgery to repair a dislocated ankle and slips…… The CTE in this mans brain needs to be studied.” Another shared a different angle of the fall and wrote that “something is seriously fucking wrong with this nigga bro.” A For The Win piece called the move “moronic” and “beyond ridiculous,” suggesting it risked landing the running back in hot water with the coaching staff ahead of training camp.
Skattebo has publicly said he expects to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season and has participated in limited drills during OTAs and minicamp. He has downplayed the long-term impact of the injury in recent comments, insisting he will return as the same physical runner. Coaches previously joked with him about limiting the flips during team activities.
The timing of the failed attempt—months into rehab and just before training camp—has amplified the online scrutiny. While Skattebo has a history of successfully landing the acrobatic move dating back to childhood trampoline practice, the latest video shows the margin for error remains thin for a player whose lower body is still recovering from significant trauma.
Giants fans and observers on X largely urged caution. Several posts framed the moment as unnecessary showmanship that could jeopardize both his 2026 availability and longer-term career. Others treated it as characteristic of the high-energy, free-spirited personality that made him a fan favorite as a rookie.
