After reaching a plea agreement in his DUI case, Tiger Woods’ driver’s license was suspended for five years on Wednesday.
In Florida’s Martin County Circuit Court, Woods entered a no contest plea to a reduced charge of careless driving and refusing to take a legal test. Woods also consented to pay $1,500 in fines as part of the deal. The golf legend was also convicted of a traffic infraction, careless driving.
Woods was informed by Judge Darren Steele that the license suspension “is for the safety of the public.”
Steele stated:
“There are no exceptions”. “If you were to drive for any reason at all, you would go immediately back to jail.”
Woods, 50, showed up in the courtroom with his lawyer, Doug Duncan, and girlfriend, Vanessa Trump. The 15-time major champion sat at the defense table and gazed back at the courtroom gallery prior to the hearing, saying very nothing.
During the hearing, Woods was seated behind Trump, the former daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump. Without speaking to media, Woods exited the courtroom.
A no-contest plea indicates that the accused will not present a defense, but it is not an admission of guilt. In the criminal court system, the plea is seen as a conviction.
On March 27, Woods’ SUV impacted a trailer being transported by a truck and rolled on its side, leading to his detention on suspicion of DUI and refusal to submit to a legal test. At first, he had entered a not guilty plea to the accusations.
