Free agent wide receiver Wes Welker and the New England Patriots reportedly seem to be on two different pages when it comes to his value as a free agent. At 32, Wes Welker has thrived as a slot receiver in New England, totaling over 100 receptions 5 out of the last 6 seasons. But, at 5’9 and on the downside of his career when you historically look at receivers in their 30’s the question has remained. How much is Welker worth?
As the second day of free agency commences, we have news that the presumed return to New England is far from happening. In fact, according to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald a deal “isn’t anywhere near close to happening.”
So does this mean Welker will end up with someone else? I personally doubt it. I think the Patriots are simply willing to allow Welker to test his value on the open market and see that their offer isn’t as preposterous as he reportedly thinks.
I believe it will take some time, but Welker will ultimately end up back in New England. But don’t be surprised if he takes some visits with other teams in the meantime.
