Either the Redskins just like to keep themselves in uncomfortable situations or they are just incompetent, but whatever the case, it makes no sense to keep both RG3 and Kirk Cousins on the roster.
It isn’t fair to either of them considering how they have both been jerked around for the past couple of years.
It is hard to succeed when you are constantly looking over your shoulder and I haven’t even mentioned Colt McCoy chilling in the background as well.
If Jay Gruden wants Cousins as his starter he needs to get rid of both RG3 and McCoy. Bring in a veteran backup who isn’t a threat to Cousins and let the chips fall where they may.
But, that isn’t happening.
Here is the report via NFL.com.
Barring an unforeseen situation, Griffin is expected to be listed second on the depth chart behind Kirk Cousins and ahead of Colt McCoy. The decision to keep Griffin currently has the approval of general manager Scot McCloughan, head coach Jay Gruden and owner Dan Snyder, a team source said.
If the Redskins decided to cut Griffin, they would have still absorbed a $6.7 million cap hit in 2015—while also still paying him his $3.25 million in guaranteed money. Because he has no offset language in his contract, Griffin still would have earned that money from the Redskins even if he’d signed with another team after clearing waivers. …
… The Redskins ultimately believed, as of Saturday morning, that Griffin is the second-best quarterback on the roster and should be kept on the team as a result. No doubt, it is also possible the team could dangle Griffin as trade bait this season, but if a team did want to trade for him, they would be forced to commit to those same financial risks facing the Redskins regarding Griffin’s 2016 salary.
There is a conflicting report that says RG3 will actually be the #3 QB.
While I understand the money aspect, the fact remains it is a toxic environment that isn’t helping anyone at the moment.
As soon as Cousins struggles, there will be calls for Griffin. When Griffin struggles there will be calls for McCoy.
Expect the Redskins to have a horrible season, but drama filled.
