Apparently, there was or is a $20 million offer to Errol Spence Jr. to fight Canelo.
When asked about it, Spence wasn’t backing down from the challenge but did say you should never take the first offer.
When Oscar De La Hoya heard this, here is what he had to say via ESPN.
I just spoke to Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who said he heard a recent interview welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr. gave in which he said he was interested in fighting Canelo Alvarez. “I am letting you know that we love the fight as well and I’ve always said that Errol Spence is one of the most talented fighters out there,” said De La Hoya, whose company used to promote Spence and did most of his bouts. “There’s no reason why Spence can’t move up to middleweight if Mikey Garcia could go up (from lightweight) to welterweight to fight Spence. And if Spence fights Canelo, it will be the most money Errol Spence will ever make. I would love to start the ball rolling. Let’s do it. We just want to get Canelo the best fights and the toughest challenges out there.”
Spence would have to jump up two weight classes to challenge for the lineal middleweight title.
This is more of a fantasy matchup than a reality one, but you never know.
