Very rarely does an elite talent stay with a franchise for their entire career.
Giannis might end up being the exception, not the rule. In today’s NBA, you might get a good 7-10 years with your star player before they start looking to team up and create a Super Team while they are still in their prime.
Rings matter, and they will try to get them by any means necessary.
Zion Williamson has barely scratched the surface of his career, and he is already annoyed with the Pelicans, according to NOLA.com, and could be plotting an early exit.
Throughout his rookie season, Williamson had grown increasingly frustrated with the Pelicans.
Williamson’s relationship with Griffin had also begun to sour. Although they communicate infrequently now, Griffin tried hard in Williamson’s rookie year to forge a bond. One example: During the Pelicans’ bubble stay, Griffin asked to meet with Williamson and played the piano for him.
In May, Williamson said he didn’t believe the Pelicans were close to becoming consistent winners. His team had just finished in 11th place in the Western Conference, even though Williamson had averaged more points in the paint than anyone since Shaquille O’Neal.
“Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is kind of insane, so I’m not going to sit here and say we’re close,” Williamson said. “The reality of it is, it was very disappointing not to be a part of the play-in tournament and stuff.”
I think Zion will sign his max extension because, financially, it makes sense, but like most teams, the Pelicans will have to show real improvement, or he will end up with LeBron during Bron’s 25th season in the NBA.
One would think playing the piano would have worked, but alas, it did not.
