We have to be honest about the situation with Brittney Griner.
She isn’t coming home any time soon. The latest update is that she will stay in custody for at least two more months while our Government tries to figure out a way to secure her release. Griner is being held on drug charges that, if convicted on, could send her to Russian jail for 10-20 years.
It is clear she is being used as a pawn by Russia to show that America is weak. The fact the US hasn’t stopped Russia from invading Ukraine shows we are a lot more bark than bite.
Here is the latest on Griner’s situation from TMZ Sports.
Brittney Griner pled not guilty in a Russian court on Thursday … and will remain in custody for AT LEAST another two months after they extended the arrest of the WNBA star, who’s accused of bringing drugs into the country. Video was released showing the Phoenix Mercury center walking, presumably outside the Moscow-area courtroom, flanked by two female guards. The footage is the first we’ve seen of 31-year-old Griner since she was taken into custody weeks ago.
Russian news agency TASS says the Moscow court granted more time to investigate the alleged crimes … and “extended the period of detention of the U.S. citizen Griner until May 19.” After her arrest, Russian officials said they opened up a drug trafficking investigation into Griner.
Many fear Griner — who has played pro basketball in Russia for years — could be used as a bargaining chip against America … as the west has levied very stiff sanctions against the country.
The only good news is that Griner seems to be unharmed when she was in court today. There are no signs of torture or abuse, at least that can be seen with the naked eye. Griner politically has nothing to offer Russia regarding secrets about our country, so we can only hope she is being well-taken care of while being detained.
